All about how to store carrots in the winter

Carrots - tasty, juicy, healthy product. Without it, it is impossible to imagine any vegetable dish.

Only it is good in one case - when it is fresh and firm. But this root vegetable fades very quickly.

During its long-term storage, it must be borne in mind that the skin of carrots is very thin, easily damaged, and this provokes diseases and rotting of all carrots. You can save it in several ways.

How to store carrots in the basement of the house or cellar?

In the cellar it is best stored in dry sand in wooden boxes. They should not be very large, it should fit no more than 15 kg of carrots.

The temperature in the cellar should not exceed + 20C, and at the same time it can not fall below zero - this root crop is very sensitive to frostbite, and after thawing it quickly becomes unusable.

To do this, you must first prepare the carrot itself. It is important to pay attention to its grade. If the roots have a shortened form, they are likely to belong to the perishable variety of Parisian carrot.

For long-term storage, you should choose varieties with a conical shape of root crops.

  1. Carrots need to be ventilated for several days before being stored.
  2. It needs to be sorted out, remove those roots that have already begun to deteriorate. If there are cracks on the carrots, but they are dry, then such a carrot can be stored for storage, but it should be used first.
  3. It must be disassembled "according to the ranking" - large with large, small with small. Fine and fine should be used firstas it dries faster.
  4. Root vegetables must be without tops. The remaining green shoots are removed.

Now prepare the sand, which will be stored carrots:

  1. The sand should be clean and fine.
  2. It should be dry - it should be dried within 2-3 days, you can sift it.

Now the prepared sand is poured into a wooden box, about 1.5-2 cm, on this sand we spread carrots in one layer. Root vegetables should not touch, because if at least one spoiled root appears, it can “infect” all the others.

Also, it should not touch the walls of the box, so that it does not form "bedsores" and do not start rotting because of them.

From above we fall asleep with sand, so that it covers the laid out carrots again by 1-2 cm. We spread a new layer of carrots. So we act to the top of the box. The top layer should be sand.

If the winter is very frosty, the box must be covered with felt. Then the carrots will not freeze and will remain fresh until the new harvest in spring.

Sand can perfectly replace dry onion peel or sawdust.

The second option is such an old way as storage in wet sand with the addition of chalk. At the same time root crops keep within heads up.

If there are a lot of carrots, it can be stored, as well as beets, in dense plastic bags. They must not be closed to prevent condensation.

Where to do it in the apartment?

It is well preserved in plastic bags in the vegetable compartment.

Instead of polyethylene, each carrot can be wrapped in paper and also stored in the vegetable compartment. But there she can not save for a long time.

“How to store fresh carrots?” - the answer is: washed carrots, grated on a coarse grater, can be stored in small portions in the freezer. Taken from the freezer, you must use it all at once. So it persists for 3-4 months.

What's better?

If you doubt where and how best to store carrots, try these methods:

  1. A carrot is put in a cardboard box and placed on a glazed loggia. It should be covered with felt, and with a strong decrease in temperature it is better to keep the house near the balcony door.
  2. There is another interesting way - in a three-liter jar on the glazed loggia. But it is suitable only for those cases when the carrots are not large and there is little of it.
  3. In past centuries in the cities, people who did not have a cellar used a rather troublesome but very effective way.

It is necessary to take an equal amount of clay and water, mix and let stand for a day. Then add another half the volume of water. In the resulting talker dip carrots. Each root crop will turn out as if in a shirt.

When it dries, you can safely put in cardboard boxes and put on a glazed loggia or in the closet. With this method of storing waste carrots turns out the least.

Choose any method, and let your carrots remain fresh and juicy all year round!
