Artificial intelligence shows success in agronomy: he learned to grow cucumbers

This was the result of the competition organized by the Wageningen Agrarian University in the Netherlands. The competition was attended by five teams consisting of software students and employees of giant engineering companies, such as Microsoft, Intel, Tencent. The main task of the teams was to create an algorithm that will grow as many cucumbers as possible. Also in the competition was a control group of people who grew cucumbers without the use of AI - on their own and knowledge.

The task of the algorithm was to grow cucumbers and give all the necessary normal conditions for the growth of vegetables. The algorithm controlled humidity, temperature, lighting, and water supply. The task of man was to pick dry leaves and harvest. The experiment was carried out in greenhouses on vertical farms that reduce the growing area.

As a result, the AI-algorithm from the Sonoma team, researchers from Microsoft, became the winning algorithm. They turned out to be the best for 3 criteria as: environmental friendliness, novelty and profit, having collected more than 50 kg of cucumbers per square meter. As the creators say, such experiments will help in the future with food problems.
